Who am I? A corrupt politician or a coward citizen

Who am I? A corrupt politician or a coward citizen

I am not so sure about others who are hell-bent towards political parties and their leaders, could be for their personal interests and benefits. There were and are some leaders in all the major political parties whom I happened to be either their college friends, working friends or relatives. During my college time, I was repeatedly asked and pushed to get involved in the then students union. For some known and unknown reasons, I never wanted to be directly involved in politics. Could be, my subconscious mind did not allow me to step into politics. I see these days some of my politician college friends, working friends and politician relatives enjoying their luxurious life styles. On the other side, I see the majority of the people are struggling to make their both ends meet.  I find myself in between them.

If I had joined the politics, I would be nowhere because of my emotional behaviour and lack of insincerity. I would not be able to drag myself into the group of corrupt politicians and ignore the plight and distress of the common people. When I look into our political parties and their leaders and their wrong doings, I get angry myself and wish I could come out to the streets and shout at the corrupt leaders for their irresponsible acts and punish them lawfully for their crimes which I cannot imagine to do so. This helpless situation of mine is hunting me most of the time and making me a helpless person who just looks at the people in the streets who are badly struggling to live a dignified life.

But, on the other hand, the state has been a reckless state due to the poor governance of the ruling party. People are dying of hunger and committing suicide due to pandemic. Until now, the government has not brought up any relief package program for these people who have either lost their jobs or businesses. Instead, they are engaged in reckless internal political feud undermining national and people’s interests. I am worried what happens if the tolerance level of the common people will exceed its limit and burst out at the streets. I still hope that the ruling party and the government will timely realize, behave responsibly, listen to the people’s plight and act accordingly.

Between a rock and a hard place: Dahal has a choice to make between siding with Oli or Nepal

Pushpa Kamal Dahal is in a fix. He owes one to Madhav Kumar Nepal. But he will have to return the favour without upsetting KP Sharma Oli.

Earlier this week it was only after seven provincial lawmakers from the faction belonging to senior party leader Madhav Kumar Nepal withdrew their support to a no-confidence motion against him that Karnali Province Chief Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, and a protege of party co-chair Dahal, was able to save his chair.

The political maneuverings played out in Karnali Province may largely be over except for some provincial positions to be settled, but the larger ramifications are that the balance of power within the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has been more visible.

Political surprises of Balen led government

Prime Minister Balen Shah’s government has broken from decades of entrenched patronage politics  in its 100 days as called " honeymoon period ". Marked by rapid shifts, sweeping administrative overhauls, and bold foreign policy maneuvers, his tenure has generated several defining political surprises. Sweeping Governance & Administration Overhauls: A New Cabinet Standard : His government bypassed traditional veteran politicians, forming a 15-member cabinet that made national headlines for exclusively consisting of highly educated professionals. Dismantling Party Unions: In his first cabinet meeting, he shocked the civil service by pushing to abolish party-affiliated trade unions and aggressively streamlining federal ministries from 25 down to 17. The " 100-Point Agenda " : His governemnt immediately published a strict, delivery-focused 100-point reform agenda with measurable deadlines, aiming to completely digitize office management and track adminis...

A rare episode in the political history

Sudan Gurung , who is a Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker, had earlier resigned from the position of Home Minister saying that he was stepping aside to ensure an impartial investigation and avoid any conflict of interest, has been reinstated on Tuesday, 9thJune 2026, after an official investigation into his finances found no wrongdoing, paving the way for his return to the office. A government-appointed investigation committee led by former High Court Judge Achyut Prasad Bhattarai submitted a 45-page report to Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah at Singha Durbar on Friday, 5th June 2026 clearing him of corruption allegations and opening the door for his possible return to the post. Independent lawmaker Mahabir Pun, who was also the minister in the interim government of Sushila Karki , has also been appointed as the Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation along with Gurung. His appointment has created a rare episode in Nepal's political history. None of the in...

Strong government weak opposition

In the general elections held on March 5, 2026 the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) won overwhelmingly 182 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives (HOR). Accordingly, a new majority government was formed under the leadership of RSP senior leader Balendra (Balen) Shah , without the support of any political party.    The RSP enjoys a comfortable majority government, whereas the oppositions are in weak positions in the national political history. The Nepali Congress (NC) has been reduced to a mere 38 seats. The CPN-UML holds 25, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) 17, the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) 7, and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) just 5. No other party managed to get even 10 percent of the total seats other than the NC. When the opposition is significantly weaker than a strong ruling party, the foundational checks and balances of a democratic system might be significantly weakened or break down. This has raised a fundamental question for the democratic republic ...
