KP
Sarma Oli has resigned after some of the worst unrest in decades rocked the
country this week, set off by a ban on social media and discontent at political
corruption and nepotism. He tried to resist the protests called by the Gen Z
but failed and had to leave his PM residence on army helicopter for his safety.
His
resignation came a day after widespread violent protests leaving 19 dead and
hundreds injured. The spark for the protests was a government ban on 26
prominent social media apps, but escalated into a larger mass movement against
corruption among political elites. Defying an indefinite curfew, thousands of
young people returned to the Kathmandu streets on Tuesday, demanding change
and clashing with riot police.
The
protests reached such intensity that houses of many top political leaders came
under siege from agitators and were ultimately set on fire. Dissatisfaction, particularly among the
younger generation, has grown as the nation has been crippled by political
instability, corruption and slow economic development, with swathes of the
population forced to travel abroad to find work.
It
remains to be seen who will be the interim Prime Minister after finalizing the
political dialogue between the Army Chief of Staff and the Gen Z leaders.
