Hat-trick of RSP

The final official results of the March 5 general elections have been officially announced by the Election Commission. The March 5 vote elected a new 275-member House of Representatives, the lower house of parliament, with 165 seats chosen directly and 110 through a proportional representation vote.

According to the final poll results published by the Election Commission, the RSP won 126 seats under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system and an additional 57 seats under proportional representation (PR).

With this unprecedented majority, the RSP will announce the new government soon. The Rastriya Swatantra Party's (RSP) victory marks the first time in decades that a single party has garnered a majority in Nepal, which has a two-system format that makes it difficult for any one party to win outright.

Political experts say this is the largest single-party majority since democracy was restored in 1991.

A party or alliance needs 138 votes to form a government. The RSP fell one seat short of a two-thirds majority.
A young party with no history of running a government will now lead the country, shouldered with the high expectations of a population eager to see quick results. It remains to be seen whether the RSP will be able to meet the peoples’ high expectation and achieve its political manifestos.
